Human Design Strategy and Authority: The Only Two Things That Matter

Human Design Strategy and Authority

Ra Uru Hu said it plainly. Over and over, in every lecture, every reading, every course. He said it so often it became the one line nobody could miss:

It always comes back to Strategy and Authority.

Not the gates. Not the channels. Not the incarnation cross or the profile or the variable. Those matter. But they are refinements. Strategy and Authority are the foundation. Everything else is built on top of these two mechanics.

If you get nothing else from Human Design, get this.

What Strategy and Authority Actually Are

Human Design is a system of differentiation. It shows you how you are built differently from everyone else. But the practical application of that knowledge comes down to two things:

Strategy is how you correctly enter into things — relationships, jobs, conversations, decisions. It is determined by your Type. There are five Types and four Strategies.

Authority is how you make correct decisions once something has entered your life. It is determined by which centers are defined in your chart. There are seven Authorities.

Strategy tells you how to engage. Authority tells you what is correct for you.

Together they replace the mind as your decision-maker. That is the entire point.

Why the Mind Cannot Make Decisions

This is the part most people resist.

We live in a world that worships the mind. We are trained from childhood to think things through, weigh pros and cons, make rational choices. The mind is celebrated as the highest authority.

Human Design says the opposite.

The mind is brilliant. It can see patterns, process information, synthesize ideas. It has enormous value — as an outer authority. It is here to observe, understand, and communicate. It is a gift you give to others.

But it is not here to run your life.

Ra called this the fundamental error of the seven-centered being. For thousands of years, before 1781, humans operated as seven-centered creatures. The mind served as both inner and outer authority. It made decisions for the self and offered wisdom to others.

The problem is that the mind lies. Not because it is malicious, but because it is conditioned. Every open center in your chart is a place where you take in energy from the world around you and amplify it. The mind, sitting in the open Head and Ajna centers of most people, processes all of that amplified conditioning and presents it as "your" thoughts.

Those thoughts are not yours. They are the not-self.

When you make decisions from the not-self mind, you enter into things that are not correct for you. Wrong jobs. Wrong relationships. Wrong cities. Wrong commitments. The result is the not-self theme of your Type — frustration, bitterness, anger, or disappointment — experienced as the chronic background noise of your life.

Strategy and Authority are the exit from that noise.

The Four Strategies by Type

Your Strategy is mechanical. It is not a philosophy or a suggestion. It is how your aura is designed to operate in the world.

Manifestors — To Inform

Manifestors are the only Type designed to initiate. They have a closed and repelling aura that pushes energy outward. Their Strategy is to inform before they act.

This is not asking permission. It is telling the people who will be affected what you are about to do. When a Manifestor informs, resistance drops. When they don't, they meet anger — from others and from themselves.

Manifestors make up about 8% of the population. Their signature is peace. Their not-self theme is anger.

Generators and Manifesting Generators — To Respond

Generators and Manifesting Generators together make up roughly 70% of humanity. They have an open, enveloping aura that pulls life toward them. Their Strategy is to wait to respond.

This does not mean sitting in a room doing nothing. It means not initiating from the mind. Life brings things to the Generator — opportunities, questions, requests, problems — and the Generator responds from the gut. The sacral response is a sound, a pull, an expansion or contraction in the body. It is not a thought.

When Generators initiate instead of responding, they end up committed to things that drain them. The result is frustration for Generators and frustration with anger for Manifesting Generators.

Their signature is satisfaction.

Projectors — To Wait for the Invitation

Projectors have a focused, absorbing aura. They see deeply into others. Their Strategy is to wait for the invitation for the big things in life — career, love, where to live, significant commitments.

The invitation is not a formality. It is the recognition of the Projector's value by another person. Without the invitation, the Projector's guidance falls flat. With it, they become the most effective guides in the room.

Projectors make up about 20% of the population. Their signature is success. Their not-self theme is bitterness.

Reflectors — To Wait a Lunar Cycle

Reflectors have no defined centers. Their aura is resistant and sampling — it takes in and reflects the energy of their environment. Their Strategy is to wait a full 28-day lunar cycle before making major decisions.

This gives the Moon time to transit through every gate in their design, activating each center temporarily. Over 28 days, the Reflector gets a complete picture of how they feel about something from every possible angle.

Reflectors are about 1% of the population. Their signature is surprise. Their not-self theme is disappointment.

The Seven Authorities

Once your Strategy brings something to you correctly, your Authority tells you whether it is right for you. This is your inner decision-making mechanism. It lives in the body, not the mind.

Authority is determined by the hierarchy of defined centers in your chart. The system checks from top to bottom: if you have a defined Solar Plexus, that is your Authority — full stop. If not, it moves to the Sacral, then the Spleen, and so on down the list.

Here is the hierarchy:

1. Emotional Authority (Solar Plexus)

The most common Authority. About 51% of people have it. If your Solar Plexus is defined, this is yours regardless of what else is defined.

The rule is simple and absolute: there is no truth in the now.

You ride your emotional wave — the natural rise and fall of feeling — and you wait for clarity. You do not decide on the crest of excitement or in the trough of despair. You wait until the wave settles and you can see clearly from a place of relative neutrality.

This requires patience. The mind hates waiting. But the emotional wave has its own timing and it cannot be rushed.

2. Sacral Authority

Available only to Generators and Manifesting Generators who do not have a defined Solar Plexus. The Sacral Center responds in the moment with sounds and sensations — the gut response.

"Uh-huh" means yes. "Uhn-uhn" means no. It is binary and it is immediate. There is no need to wait. The Sacral knows now.

The trick is asking the right questions. Sacral Authority responds best to yes/no questions. Open-ended questions confuse it. The mind cannot access this response — it has to come from the body.

3. Splenic Authority

The Spleen is the oldest awareness center. It operates in the moment through instinct, intuition, and a primal sense of what is healthy or unhealthy. Splenic Authority speaks once, quietly, and does not repeat itself.

This Authority is spontaneous. It tells you in an instant whether something is safe or not, right or not. If you miss it — if the mind overrides it with logic — the moment passes and the clarity is gone.

People with Splenic Authority must learn to trust the quiet hit of knowing that comes before the mind has time to form an opinion.

4. Ego / Heart Authority

Rare. Found in Manifestors and Projectors with a defined Heart Center connected to the Throat (Ego Manifested) or without a motor to the Throat (Ego Projected).

This Authority operates through willpower and the question: What do I want? What is in it for me?

That sounds selfish. It is not. The Heart Center is designed to make commitments it can keep. When someone with Ego Authority commits to something that genuinely serves them, they have the willpower to follow through. When they commit out of obligation or guilt, the will burns out and the body pays the price.

5. Self-Projected Authority

Found only in Projectors. The G Center (identity, direction, love) connects directly to the Throat without any motors involved. These Projectors find their truth by speaking it.

Not by thinking it. By saying it out loud to someone they trust and listening to what comes out of their own mouth. The voice carries the truth that the mind cannot access.

This is why Self-Projected Projectors need a sounding board — not for advice, but for the act of hearing their own direction spoken aloud.

6. Environmental (Mental / No Inner Authority)

This is for Projectors who have no motors defined and no connection between defined centers below the Throat. They have no traditional inner authority.

Their clarity comes from the environment itself. The right place, the right people, the right conversation. They talk things through — not to get answers from others, but to hear how different environments affect their own sense of what is correct.

If the environment feels wrong, the decision is wrong. These are people who must be very particular about where they are and who they are with.

7. Lunar Authority

Exclusive to Reflectors. Because Reflectors have no defined centers, none of the above authorities apply. Their Authority is the Moon.

They wait 28 days — one full lunar cycle — to move through every gate in their design. Over that cycle, each center gets activated temporarily by the transit field, giving the Reflector a chance to feel into the decision from every angle.

This is the longest decision-making process in Human Design. It requires extraordinary patience and a deep trust that clarity will come in its own time.

How Strategy and Authority Work Together

They are not separate systems. They are two parts of the same mechanic.

Strategy brings things to you correctly. Authority confirms whether those things are right for you. One without the other is incomplete.

A Generator who waits to respond (Strategy) but then decides from the mind instead of the gut (ignoring Authority) will still end up in wrong commitments. A Projector who receives an invitation (Strategy) but accepts it out of desperation instead of checking with their Authority will end up bitter.

Here is how the sequence works:

  1. Something shows up in your life. A job offer. A relationship. A question. A request.
  2. Your Strategy determines how you engage with it. Did it come to you? Were you invited? Did you initiate correctly?
  3. Your Authority tells you whether to say yes. Does your wave settle into clarity? Does your gut say yes? Does your spleen light up? Does your voice carry conviction?

The mind watches all of this. It observes. It has opinions. You do not act on those opinions. You act on the body's response.

The Not-Self: What Goes Wrong Without This

When you do not follow your Strategy and Authority, you live as the not-self. Ra described the not-self as the life lived through the open centers — the conditioned, distorted version of who you think you are.

Each open center carries a specific not-self theme:

  • Open Head: Thinking about things that don't matter to you
  • Open Ajna: Pretending to be certain when you are not
  • Open Throat: Trying to attract attention
  • Open G: Searching for love and direction
  • Open Heart: Trying to prove yourself
  • Open Sacral: Not knowing when enough is enough
  • Open Solar Plexus: Avoiding confrontation and truth
  • Open Spleen: Holding on to what is not good for you
  • Open Root: Being in a hurry to be free of pressure

The mind takes all of this conditioning and makes decisions from it. Every time you let the not-self mind drive, you move further from what is correct for you.

Strategy and Authority cut through this. They bypass the conditioned mind entirely. The body knows. The mind does not.

How to Start Living Your Strategy and Authority

This is an experiment. Human Design asks you to try it for yourself — not to believe it.

Ra suggested a seven-year deconditioning process. That is how long it takes for every cell in your body to turn over and release the conditioning stored in it. Seven years of following your Strategy and Authority before you can say you have truly lived your design.

That sounds like a long time. It is. But it does not mean you wait seven years to see results. Most people notice changes within weeks of beginning the experiment.

Here is how to start:

1. Know your Type and Authority. Get your chart at humandesign.wtf. Look at your Type. Look at your Authority. These are the only two things you need to begin.

2. Watch the not-self. Before you change anything, observe. Notice where you initiate when you should be waiting. Notice where you decide from the mind when the body is saying something different. Just watch. Awareness is the first step.

3. Practice with small decisions. You do not need to overhaul your life on day one. Start with everyday choices — what to eat, who to call, what to work on next. Let your Authority guide these small moments. Build the muscle.

4. Track your signature and not-self theme. If you are a Generator, are you feeling more satisfaction or more frustration? If you are a Projector, more success or more bitterness? These feelings are your feedback loop. They tell you whether you are on track.

5. Be patient with yourself. You have been making decisions from the mind for your entire life. The body's intelligence is still there, but it may take time to hear it clearly again. That is normal.

FAQ

What is Strategy and Authority in Human Design?

Strategy is the correct way for your Type to engage with life — how you enter into decisions, relationships, and opportunities. Authority is your inner decision-making mechanism, determined by the defined centers in your chart. Together, they replace the mind as your primary decision-maker.

How do I find my Strategy and Authority?

Generate your free Human Design chart at humandesign.wtf. Your chart will show your Type (which determines your Strategy) and your Authority. You need your exact birth date, time, and location.

Can my Authority change over time?

No. Your Authority is determined by your birth data and does not change. What changes is your relationship to it — your ability to hear it, trust it, and act on it. That deepens over time as you decondition.

What if my Strategy and Authority conflict with what my mind wants?

That happens constantly, especially at the beginning. The mind will have strong opinions about what you should do. Strategy and Authority often point in a different direction. The experiment is to follow the body and see what happens. Most people find that the body's choices lead to better outcomes than the mind's, even when they don't make logical sense at first.

Is Emotional Authority better or worse than other Authorities?

No Authority is better or worse. They are simply different mechanisms. Emotional Authority requires patience because of the wave. Sacral Authority is immediate. Splenic Authority is instantaneous. Each one is correct for the person who has it. The challenge with Emotional Authority is that it is the slowest, and we live in a culture that rewards fast decisions. But speed is not accuracy.

What does "no truth in the now" mean for Emotional Authority?

It means that any decision made in the peak of an emotional high or the depth of an emotional low is not reliable. The emotional wave distorts perception. Clarity comes when the wave settles — when you are neither thrilled nor devastated. That is when you can see the decision for what it actually is.

How long does deconditioning take?

Ra said seven years. That is the full biological cycle for every cell in the body to be replaced. But you will notice shifts much sooner. The process is gradual. You do not wake up on year seven suddenly deconditioned. It happens day by day, decision by decision, as you practice following your Strategy and Authority instead of your mind.
